Southside’s Arts Program is a vibrant, exciting and progressive program, designed to bring out the talents and abilities of our artists, and to develop self-confidence through artistic expression.

Southside’s visual and performing arts studios provide new choices. Our visual arts program may include painting, drawing, ceramics, sculpture, woodworking, wire sculpture, knitting, mask making and many other choices. We encourage our artists to create their own projects and methods of working, in order to develop their artistic voice.

Many of our artists choose to exhibit and sell their art at Southside Art Center Gallery and other community exhibitions in the Sacramento area. The artists at Southside have a great time creating art, and many are empowered from their artwork that is sold.

Leslie Callan

Leslie Callan, a native of Sacramento, received her BA in Studio Art from Sacramento State University. While her earlier works focused mainly on drawing and painting, she has added the medium of photography in the last couple of years. Throughout her career she has created commissioned works, spent time working in the interior design field and has participated in local art exhibits, such as the 50-50 show at the 20th Street Art Gallery and solo shows around the Sacramento area. Today, she runs a boutique photography business, doing commercial and business shoots as well as portraits and weddings.

Chazelle Owens

Chazelle has always felt a sense of mystery and magic within her own reality. She has experienced many special places that have decided to surface and be displayed playfully on wood, canvas, paper and clay. The layers and layers of creamy colors are comforting while her characters display the deepest thoughts and emotions she has experienced. Playing in the woods or an underwater tea party are magical times for her where her wounds can be transformed.

Juan Jose Gutierrez Reyes

Juan Jose Gutierrez Reyes (aka RP “Tito”) was born in Guadalajara in ’84 and currently resides in Ciudad Guzman, Jalisco. He is in constant demand as a private artist, painting murals in homes all around Mexico. However, RP is a true “urban artist” with a love of graffiti painting. His techniques are diverse as he employs the use of canvas, wood, walls, carbon, oils, acrylics, chlorine, gum- and anything else that he can get his hands on.

RP says that he is inspired to paint birds “because they just fly by instinct of survival”, and also the faces of women, whom he likes to “imagine what goes through their mind”. Citing the diversity of bright colors as another inspiration, RP says that his paintings intend to “grab your whole life without hands”.
